The 6th Annual MAVIS GOSS OPEN hosted by ALBERTA SPRINGS Golf Resort a choice golf destination. No tournament would be complete without special hole challenges and our volunteers work hard to add this fun feature to the tournament.

What We've Done

The Fifth Annual Mavis Goss Open was successful in meeting their goal of raising enough funds to donate to the Central Alberta Sexual Assault Support Centre in to assist securing an additional sexual assault counselor. A total of $70,000 was raised this year and along with a cheque, a specially selected painting by local artist Jasmine Nelson was presented to CASASC.

Over the last number of years, thanks to the success of the MGO, we have been able to fulfill the wishes of sick children throughout Alberta with a donation value of $115,000. Honoured to be the single largest benefactor to the Rainbow Society of Alberta, wishes from family vacations to meeting famous hockey players have been able to be met through this program.  Our third year of the tournament raised $70,000 and fourth year saw another $45,000.

We have been able to donate over $210,000 to Red Deer's own Ronald McDonald House. Essential to families that are displaced from their home when their child requires treatment at the Red Deer Regional Hospital, the RDRMH provides somewhere to stay and their team of volunteers work to make guests feel at home.  In our very first year, we were able to donate $142,000.  Our second year added another $68,000.

Being able to connect with the end recipient of our fundraising is a special honour, and Ron Goss, Mavis' husband was able to participate in the True-Line El Salvador Project by helping build new homes and present the keys to families in El Salvador. A total of $9000 has been donated to date.

About The Foundation

Our Inspiration: Mavis and her husband Ron moved to Red Deer Alberta from Manitoba in 2000.  Mavis quickly became known within the new home construction industry as a tenacious sales professional first during her employment with Woodmaster Cabinets and later with Trail Appliances where she worked as a Contract Sales Representative. Tenacity may actually be an understatement, as Mavis was likely one of the most dynamic ladies you may have met.

In October 2009, after a lingering cough refused to subside, Mavis was diagnosed with stage IV lung cancer, despite being a life time non-smoker. Mavis was given a diagnosis of 6 months to a year to live. After a seemingly endless amount of research with the help of her husband Ron, Mavis reached a decision to pursue an alternative treatment process that she combined with traditional methods. Mavis believed that the traditional methods of chemotherapy would unquestionably reduce the quality of life she was determined to live. With the alternative treatments Mavis was able to maintain the healthy and happy quality of life she so strongly desired.

In March 2010 Mavis decided to form The Mavis Goss Open Golf Tournament. With the combined support of her loving husband, family and friends, as well as Mavis's well known tenacity, The First Annual Mavis Goss Open raised over $142,000.00 in support of the Ronald McDonald House of Central Alberta. The success of the tournament was one of Mavis's greatest and proudest accomplishments.

One year and eight months after the diagnosis, Mavis lost her battle with cancer. On April 22, 2011 Mavis passed away peacefully at home with the husband she loved so dearly by her side. While Mavis may not be with us in body her spirit lives on. Her wish was for those who love and care for her continue to make this tournament a success.

In her name we can continue to help others in need. Please help us in building the legacy of this amazing woman who touched so many lives with her smile, lifted so many hearts with her voice, and attracted so many people with her laugh. Mavis was and still is an inspiration to all who knew her.

Our Mission: To honour the legacy of Mavis Goss by raising funds for not-for-profit, charitable organizations helping women and children in Central Alberta.

Our Values: Philanthropy, Integrity, Passion, Honesty, Respect.
